956 years of worship in the heart of Southampton

"Everyone knows about 1066 — when William of Normandy defeated Harold and took the throne. The story of St Michael the Archangel begins but four years later."

When our tower was first raised in 1070, Southampton was a newly Norman town. Monarchs have come and gone, the city has been bombed and rebuilt, but St Michael's has endured through it all — the last surviving medieval church of Southampton's Old Town.

From its Norman origins to cast-iron Victorian columns, from a spire raised at the request of Trinity House to a new East window born from WWII bomb damage, our building carries almost a thousand years of story in its stones.
